New York Jets coach Robert Saleh announced on Monday the decision to bench Zach Wilson for Tim Boyle and Trevor Seimian. Being benched may be a blow to his pride but it could unexpectedly work out in his favor. Zach might look like a boyband singer, but he's gonna live that thug life.
College QB Dream
Wilson's college football career is nothing short of dazzling. In his first game for B.Y.U. (vs Hawaii), he made history as the program’s youngest quarterback ever to start a game. He became the M.V.P. of the 2018 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. He additionally became B.Y.U’s M.V.P. after starting nine games, completing 199 of 319 (62%) passes with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Where's the Spark?
The Jets drafted Wilson from BYU, No. 2 overall in the 2021 NFL draft. Many believe he hasn't done as well for the Jets since being drafted. Prior to Sunday, Wilson had completed 56% career passes with 20 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. In Sunday's game Jets vs. Bills, we saw Wilson struggling. Like a puppy trying to keep up with the big dogs.
Still a Newb
Remember, Zach Wilson is young and it's his 2nd year playing. He's originally the backup QB and was forced to step in as main QB once Aaron Rogers got hurt. Everyone seems to forget, many QBs aren't immediately great, but build up to it with experience.
Compare Aaron Rogers's first 2 years of career stats...
2005 - Completed 56% passes with 0 touchdowns and 1 interception
2006 - Completed 40% passes with 0 touchdowns and 0 interceptions
Possible Hidden Challenges
Wilson stepped up to the plate and has done his best under the circumstances for a team and fans that underappreciate his efforts. There may also be underlying circumstances.
Maybe he's not the right fit with this team.
Maybe the teammates are dropping the ball?
Maybe they're loyal to Rogers?
Maybe Wilson misses the slower-paced life of Utah, contrastly different from New York.
Maybe the fame and limelight are wearing him down.
Maybe he misses his close-knit family.
Thug Life
This could be the change Zach Wilson needs. He will continue to get paid and utilize his time to watch the games, take notes, and practice his talents. There's a possibility he searches for another team that's closer to home or a better fit. It's difficult to take a setback, but most often the best things come from the worst situations. It's a chance to gain wisdom and growth. Wilson has a good head on his shoulders and won't let this setback get him down. Feels like he's going to make a big comeback.
