The symbolism of #Juneteenth is the transition from slavery to freedom. - Leslie Wilson, Prof. of History at Montclair State University in New Jersey
Juneteenth was created as a federal holiday only three years ago. This date commemorates freedom and the official fall of slavery on June 19, 1865. After the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863 to free enslaved Black people, it was unenforceable in the South until federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX.
Boston native and activist Ben Haith created the official Juneteenth Flag. Boston Red Sox celebrated the special day by inviting Haith to throw the ceremonial first pitch at the Red Sox vs. Yankees game on June 19 https://loom.ly/KEPxBgI
