During stage 2 at the Tour de France in Spain on Sunday, several riders experienced punctures from tacks thrown on the road. Lilian Calmejane shared a photo on Twitter of his tire laced with tacks. According to officials, it appears that the tacks were deliberately thrown onto the race course.
Thank you for this kind of human bullshit… I don't think I was the only victim of a puncture in the end… know that you can fall and get really hurt with your bullshit you morons… - Calmejane
Victor Lafay from team Cofidis was lucky to be the only one of the team's eight starters to avoid a puncture. The French team won its first Tour stage since 2008.
These incidents happened during a time of tension in France after a week of protests against police brutality. The violent protests began following the killing of 17-year-old Nahel M, who was killed by a police officer. It is unknown if the two incidents are related.
