Wig History
Where did wigs come from?
The ancient Egyptians were innovators. Due to the hot humid climate in Egypt, shaving was a common practice. Egyptians believed body hair was unhygienic and ugly. Because many of them shaved their heads, they created wigs to protect their bare skin from the sun. Wealthy Egyptians would wear elaborate wigs made out of real or artificial hair. Additionally, they placed scented head cones of animal fat on top of their wigs, to help mask body odor.
What about Powdered Wigs?
King Louis XIII was the trendsetter responsible for the "periwig" or powdered wig. The image-conscious King began covering his premature balding by wearing long, curled wigs to maintain his appearance. The royal style quickly transcended to the elite upper-class society and became all the rage. Wigs were typically made with goat hair and due to the inconsistent washing, they began powdering them to manage smell and bugs. Wig powder came in many pastel colors, but white was the most popular and considered extremely fashionable. Elaborately decorated tall wigs grew increasingly popular with the wealthy. This is where the term "big wig" comes from. Powdered wigs were very expensive and conveyed a sign of wealth and knowledge.
